ABB:s Production Planning / Trimming is a software package developed to solve the trim scheduling problems of paper and board mills with roll, cut-sheet and mixed roll and cut-sheet production. There are different optimization strategies used by Trimming: linear algorithm, heuristic algorithm and one based on integer optimization. The production planner decides which optimization method to use, controls the results with parameters, and modifies the cutting plan when necessary. The results can be modified with graphical user interface.
The ask The current Windows application has served well, but is outdated: in 2020's, ABB wants the product to be browser based. To start the transformation of the product, they wanted me to do user research in a paper mill, and continue by redesigning the UI's to meet the needs of users and the requirements of new browser based context.
The outcome I summarised user study insights and drafted a new browser based UI in co-operation with ABB:s product experts. The main working principles of the product were not touched, but we found places for many tweaks and improvements. New UI solutions were cross-checked to match the standards of ABB:s existing CommonUX Design System. In the end, the new UX was communicated and documented with a wireframe prototype showcasing all the different possible states.
